Rogue rider dodges jail
A motorcyclist who has been banned from driving on eight separate occasions is still on the roads, meaning motorcycle insurance customers may need to be wary.
24-year-old James Lewis was spared from jail yesterday as the court agreed to give him "just one last chance" to amend his ways.
Mr Lewis was caught riding around the streets of Ipswich at more than twice the legal limit and without a protective crash helmet.
He then hurled verbal abuse at police officers, who found that he was also driving while disqualified and without motorcycle insurance or MoT.
South East Suffolk magistrates told Lewis that he "should be given prison today" after a string of offences, but offered him one more chance and instead ordered him to do 100 hours unpaid work.
Mr Lewis was also placed on 18 months probation supervision and banned from driving for two years.
As well as requiring cover by law, riders taking out motorcycle insurance policies can ensure that they are protected against damage caused to their vehicles by rogue motorists and against theft.
Indeed, the South Devon Herald Express today reported on a motorbike which was stolen twice in Torquay in one day.
After initially recovering the bike the owner fitted it with a disc lock, only for it to be taken again, and police are now appealing for any information in relating to the theft.
