Police tackle nuisance riders

Nuisance bikers are under the spotlight again as Northumbria Police aim to penalise those riders who are breaking the law.

Operation Diamond is targeting motorbike users who continue to ride without motorbike insurance and other legally-required documents, as well as those who fail to equip themselves with crash helmets, gloves and other safety kit.

Four off-road bikes have already been seized in the crackdown, with two set to be crushed, and a 17-year-old rider has been charged with a string of offences.

The youth is accused of driving carelessly, without a licence or insurance, and failing to stop for police.

Bikers in the area have been issued with warning notices as officers continue to act on information provided by the public, and police have also visited local schools.

Acting Sergeant Paul Burrows said that irresponsible use of the vehicles could lead to death or serious injury, as well as impacting on the quality of life for local residents.

He reassured the public that police would continue to "actively pursue" dangerous and illegal riders, with offenders facing arrest and bikes being seized.

Police in Suffolk warned parents last week to "think twice" before buying mini motorbikes for their children this Christmas in light of several complaints from residents in the area about young bikers.
