Motorbike sales on the rise

The number of riders taking out bike insurance on their new vehicles is on the rise, with sales up four per cent in October compared to the same month last year.

As car sales continue to decline in the face of the ongoing credit squeeze, the figures suggest that more British road users could be turning to two-wheeled transport to cut costs.

Total registrations are down just 1.5 per cent for the first ten months of this year compared to 2007, with car registrations down 8.8 per cent.

While Motor Cycle Industry Association acting chief executive Steve Kenward admitted that the bike industry was not immune to the downturn, he said that powered two wheelers were now "more relevant than ever".

"As people look for ways to reduce the costs and hassles of travel, they are realising that motorcycles are an efficient, low cost option," he added.

Almost all categories of motorcycles and scooters experienced gains last month, with the Suzuki GSXR 1000 enjoying the highest number of registrations.

New owners will be reminded of the importance of taking out fully covered bike insurance on their vehicles after thieves broke into a house in Oxfordshire before making off with a Yamaha R6 motorbike, according to the Oxford Mail.
