Police seek to ban bikers from "protection zones"
Motorcycle insurance customers have been targeted as the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) looks to improve safety on British roads, a report suggests.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the group has called for motorcycling to be prohibited on some roads in the country in evidence submitted to the Transport Select Committee.
The submission also detailed the need for "radical thinking" that considers the engine capability of the machines to create protection zones from which motorcyclists are banned.
However, the report argues that "substantial" evidence exists that shows no correlation between a motorbike's power output and the chance of accident.
David Griffin, Deputy Chief Constable of Humberside, said that talk of ACPO seeking a ban on the vehicles was "nonsense", with the evidence submitted to the Transport Select Committee simply aiming to restrict off-road motorcycles.
But the Daily Telegraph found no mention of off-road vehicles in the ACPO evidence, and also highlighted further mistakes in its figures.
Refuting claims from the association that some machines on British roads reached top speeds "in excess of 200 miles per hour", the paper highlighted the motorcycle industry's voluntary 186mph speed limitation on all road models.
The revelations come after London mayor Boris Johnson last month issued plans for an 18-month trial period in which motorcycle insurance customers in London would be permitted to use the capital's red route bus lanes to help cut congestion.
