Businesses turn to motorcycle fleets
With rising petrol prices and global economic problems hitting businesses hard, many firms in Scotland are turning to motorbikes to help improve efficiency and cut costs, according to a report.
The Edinburgh Evening News suggests that companies are opening their eyes to the machines as a faster mode of transport that also benefits the environment.
Riders are transporting light packages and memos between offices, but the report claims that motorbike insurance customers could make their way across the region even quicker were they not held up in queues of idling traffic.
And the problem is made all the more frustrating when designated bus lanes in many major cities often lie empty, it claimed, meaning the recent plans to let London motorcyclists use the lanes are likely to be welcomed by bikers.
Despite arguments that the plans could make journeys more dangerous for cyclists who already use the greenways, recent research has shown no such problem, meaning the ruling could be set to spread across the UK.
"There's a real chance to alleviate some of our traffic woes with a policy like this," the report claimed.
The 18-month trial period allowing bikers to use London bus routes is set to run from January 5th next year, and the British Motorcyclists Federation's Jeff Stone said it would make life safer "for all vulnerable road users".
