Riders warned to obey road rules

With National Road Safety Week well underway, drivers and motorcycle insurance customers are being urged to obey the rules of the road to avoid potentially tragic consequences.

Gloucestershire County Council is to deliver a series of presentations to help raise awareness amongst young people at nurseries, schools and colleges across the region, reports The Forester.

Figures released to coincide with the safety drive revealed that fatalities on roads in the area are on the rise in 2008, with 35 people killed already compared to 40 in the whole of 2007.

Garry Handley, the council's head of road safety, said that road safety awareness was not about simply talking to people but working with them.

"It's about individuals taking responsibility for their own actions and making people realise it does not just happen to someone else," he explained.

Despite a drop in the number of people killed and seriously on the roads over the last 25 years, Mr Handley insisted that work could still be done.

"Every fatality or serious injury is one too many and educational programmes are important," he added.

Motorcycle insurance customers were reminded of the dangers of their hobby earlier this week after the death of a biker in Essex, according to the Suffolk Evening Star.

An inquest heard that 28-year-old Lawrence Jupp "made a mistake" trying to overtake a car on his Yamaha motorcycle and was killed in a collision with a lorry.
