Police in East Lancashire are to target bike insurance customers and young drivers in a bid to cut the number of people killed or seriously injured on the region's roads.

Operation pathway will focus on dangerous and irresponsible drivers, with particular attention paid to young people and motorcyclists who have been identified as the most vulnerable road users.

Police presence will be stepped up as officers deploy a variety of methods and carry out action days to help educate motorists and ensure they stick to the rules of the road.

Chief Inspector Damian Darcy, who is leading the operation, said that cutting the number of "reckless" drivers on the roads would help to reduce the number of serious accidents.

Whilst much of this operation would involve enforcing the rules of the road, he added, motorists were also encouraged to listen to police advice and instruction.

"Operation Pathway is also about educating people and encouraging them to alter the manner of their driving according to the conditions of the road," he said.

Similar operations have taken place across the UK this week as part of National Road Safety Week, with Gloucestershire County Council running a series of presentations at local schools and colleges to help raise awareness, according to the Forester.
