Buying a motorbike 'not to be taken lightly'
Many parents in the UK may have been pestered into buying their children motorbikes for Christmas this year, but they are being warned to make sure they understand the implications of doing so.
Safer Doncaster Partnership has launched a new campaign to make sure the legal issues involved in owning a motorcycle are not forgotten amid the festive excitement, according to the South Yorkshire Star.
Parents have been warned that failing to cover all requirements could lead to the vehicles being crushed and either themselves or their children being prosecuted.
As well as a driving licence or provisional licence, buyers are reminded to ensure they are covered by bike insurance and hold a current test certificate and road tax.
Essential safety equipment and working lights are also required, and parents are urged to ensure that young riders do not violate laws concerning where bikes can be ridden and other antisocial behaviour issues.
"Motorbikes can be extremely dangerous," said deputy mayor Stuart Exelby.
"Buying one of these vehicles is not a decision to be taken lightly," he warned.
Northumbria Police recently launched an operation aimed at clamping down on motorbike riders found to be flouting the law, with four off-road bikes seized and two crushed after being ridden illegally.
