Ex-Superbike Champion to front new safety scheme

Riders are to be targeted by a new safety campaign fronted by TV motorsport presenter Louise Brady and former Superbike Champion Steve Parrish.

The Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) is designed to improve the safety of motorcyclists and could help cut the number of motorcycle insurance claims made each year.

Run by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), the ERS is to be showcased at the 2008 Motorcycle and Scooter Show in Birmingham at the end of this month.

Ms Brady said: "The Enhanced Rider Scheme offers an opportunity to iron out bad habits and keep you safer on the roads, as well as helping you get more from your motorcycle."

The scheme includes a new training package as part of a government drive to reduce the number of fatal and serious accidents involving motorcyclists each year.

It aims to encourage bikers to use the roads more safely, and Ms Brady said it could also help to gain riders discounts on their motorcycle insurance.

Valid insurance is a legal requirement for any motorist hitting UK roads, and also helps owners to cover the cost of any damage done to their vehicle.

Indeed, one owner in Chard is likely to have been forced into making a claim after firefighters were called to douse a motorbike that is thought to have been deliberately set on fire, according to the Chard and Ilminster News.
