Police seek witnesses to moped assault
Police are appealing for witnesses after a bike insurance customer in Southampton was attacked by a group of youths.
The 25-year-old pizza delivery driver was pulled off his motorcycle before being assaulted and robbed by the gang of more than ten individuals.
Youths stepped in front of the driver on Hinkler Road just before 10pm last Friday, blocking his way.
They then dragged him from his vehicle before removing the man's crash helmet and forcing him to the ground.
Despite demands for money, the man successfully broke free, only to be followed by four of the gang who later caught up with him and threatened to assault him again if he did not hand over his takings.
They eventually made off with £35 as well as the driver's helmet and red Suzuki moped, which was later found burnt out by Hampshire Fire and Rescue.
Police are now appealing for any information relating to the crime and PC Mark Brown, of Hampshire Constabulary, confirmed that police were taking the incident very seriously.
"This was a violent assault and robbery on a man trying to just do his job. It was only due to the motorcycle protective gear he was wearing that he wasn't very badly hurt," he added.
In other news, a 12-year-old boy who has been arrested 40 times since the turn of the year has been sentenced to eight months' detention after stealing a range of items including a laptop, motorbike, sat system and DVD player.
