Riders on high alert

Riders in Northamptonshire are being warned to be on high alert after a recent increase in the number of thefts in the area.

Motorbike owners are also urged to take extra precautions to avoid falling victim to thieves and facing a subsequent rise on their motorcycle insurance policies.

Vehicles have been taken from gardens and driveways and crime prevention sergeant Pauline Sturman, of Northamptonshire North Police, asked riders to leave their vehicles in a secure garage wherever possible.

She also suggested motorcycle owners take added measures to help increase the security of their vehicles, claiming that steering locks should not be relied upon to deter thieves.

"It is always beneficial to arm the bike with an alarm or consider identity marking the main parts of the motorcycle with the vehicle identification number," Sergeant Sturman said.

Earlier this month, police in Gloucestershire announced plans to make locking devices available for motorcyclists to help combat the theft of vehicles in the area.

Officers also made ground anchor points available in several car parks across the region and PC Mark Godsland said that plans were afoot to introduce the facility to other urban areas across the county.

Any rider providing positive proof of identity is allowed to borrow the locks to help secure their vehicles against the threat of theft.
