Family issue safety plea to motorbike users

Relatives of a motorcyclist killed in a road accident in Plymouth have urged other bike insurances to learn from the man's death.

Shane Salt, 45, died after losing control of his powerful Suzuki 1100cc vehicle as he attempted to overtake a line of traffic on Wembury Road, the Plymouth Herald reports.

His pillion passenger, 18-year-old Richard Edwards, was also killed in the collision with a Land Rover last year, and Mr Salt's daughter pleaded with other bikers to take extra care on the roads.

Speaking after an inquest into the incident yesterday, 21-year-old Jordan Salt said her family had paid the price for her father's "moment of madness".

Mr Salt's stepdaughter, Kelly Brumhead, said: "I just wish people would take care when they ride their motorbikes so nobody else has to go through this."

"It's the people who are left behind who suffer," she added.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Plymouth coroner Ian Arrow said the two men had been "out for a pleasure drive" when Mr Salt lost control of the motorbike.

The family's plea comes after the launch of a new safety scheme due to be showcased at the Birmingham's 2008 Motorcycle and Scooter Show later this month.

Fronted by former Superbike Champion Steve Parrish, the Enhanced Rider Scheme is aimed at ironing out bad habits and improving safety for motorcyclists.
