Spoof video to help spread safety message
A humorous new campaign has been launched to help improve rider safety and cut the number of motorcycle insurance claims on UK roads.
In a pro-bike video shot in the form of a spoof wildlife documentary, Devon County Council explores different breeds of bikers, including those who hibernate during winter months and those who continue to hit the road.
It is intended to promote year-round riding for motorcyclists in order to help keep on top of riding skills and reduce the risk of future accidents.
The footage, which is posted on both YouTube and the Motorcyclenews website as part of the council's Winter Riding campaign, attracted over 25,000 hits during its first few weeks.
Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council executive member of the environment, said the approach had proved "hugely popular" with bikers.
"The videos are good fun and passing them on helps spread a really worthwhile message about bikers keeping up their skills," she added.
Winter Riding project is part of the council's "Bringing Bikers Out of the Blindspot" campaign, which was launched in 2004 and has since introduced improved training for riders as well as a number of education and awareness initiatives.
Bikers were also targeted by a national safety campaign recently, which is run by the Driving Standards Agency and is supported by former Superbike Champion Steve Parrish.
