'Police refused to chase thieves', claims rider

A motorcyclist in Hampshire has been forced into making a claim on his bike insurance after thieves made off with his vehicle.

Mohammed Ibrahim, a student and part-time pizza deliver driver, was knocked from his bike and beaten to the ground by a gang of ten youths in Thornhill earlier this month, the Southern Daily Echo reports.

He claims police then refused to give chase due to fears for the safety of the offenders, who were not wearing crash helmets.

The teens stole £35 from Mr Ibrahim before later torching the bike, which was found in nearby Mersham Gardens.

He was reporting the initial theft to officers when two of the thieves rode past on his bike.

"I said to the police 'that is my bike'. They said they couldn't chase them as they were not wearing helmets and it will be dangerous for them," he revealed.

Mr Ibrahim said it was "crazy" that they could not pursue the offenders, but a Hampshire police spokesman told the paper that officers did have other options available to them to help identify and prosecute criminals.

Meanwhile, riders in Northamptonshire are being warned to be extra vigilant in the face of recent increase in the number of motorbikes being taken from yards and driveways.
