Police hold talks with trail bikers
Derbyshire police carried out a day-long initiative earlier this week to encourage responsible driving by off-road bikers.
Officers held talks with riders at a series of meeting points around the Peak District, offering information and advice on minimising the disruption caused to residents by their hobby.
More than 40 off-road motorbike riders were spoken to during the day, although nine will now be investigated for hitting the tracks without motorbike insurance.
Three were also found to have no licence and several others were issued with warnings over the legal requirements of number plates.
Despite this, Police Constable Kevin Lowe assured riders that the strategy was not aimed at enforcing laws or penalising bike users.
"It was designed to enable us to talk to trail bikers in a friendly way about the information that is available to help them act responsibly," he insisted.
The event was held as part of Operation Blackbrook, which launched in April 2007 and is aimed at continually encouraging trail bikers to drive lawfully and understand the impact of their activities on the lives of local residents.
Police in South Oxhey recently announced plans to use a force helicopter to target illegal bikers who are wreaking havoc on playing fields and woods in the area, according to the Watford Observer.
