Calls for better training for bikers
Improvements in the training of motorcyclists are required in order to cut the number of riders killed or injured on roads in Scotland, experts have claimed.
The Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) made the calls after an increase in the number of serious injuries among motorbike users and cyclists last year.
Despite figures revealing an overall drop of 11 per cent in the number of deaths on Scotland's roads, the organisation warned against complacency towards the matter.
Kathleen Braidwood, RoSPA road safety officer for Scotland, said she was "disappointed" by the rise in motorbike injuries.
"Motorcyclists are among our most vulnerable road users and we need to see improvements in their training to help them develop the skills and experience they need," she urged.
Mrs Braidwood also called for both drivers and riders to undergo refresher training to help further reduce the number of accidents.
This would help improve concentration and observation among drivers, as well as stamping out bad habits.
The call comes after the Driving Standards Agency announce a new Enhanced Rider Scheme last week aimed at improving the safety of motorbike insurance customers.
Set to be showcased at the 2008 Motorcycle and Scooter Show, the initiative is being backed by former Superbike Champion Steve Parrish.
