Riders stung by moped thefts

Motorbike riders in Lancashire are being warned to be extra vigilant in the coming weeks after several attempted thefts.

Thieves have targeted 11 mopeds at various addresses across the Darwen area over the past ten days, with some being successful in their attempts to steal the vehicles.

Most recently, a blue Hussar moped to the value of £400 was swiped from a back yard on Newton Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

This followed another theft nearby, which saw the owner of a £1,000 Peaggio moped left facing a potentially expensive claim on his bike insurance after crooks made off with the vehicle.

Detective Sergeant Ian Geogarty, of Lancashire Constabulary, said that officers suspected the perpetrators to be local teenagers.

He confirmed that enquiries were ongoing in a bid to identify and bring them to justice, warning other riders in the area to take precautions to avoid becoming the thieves' next victim.

"Some [offenders] have been entering people's back yards and breaking the chains of the mopeds before making off with them," he warned.

This means owners should be extra vigilant, Detective Sergeant Geogarty urged, and anyone who sees anything suspicious in the area should contact police immediately.

The thefts follow a report in the Southern Daily Echo in which pizza deliver worker Mohammed Ibrahim claimed that police had failed to give chase to thieves who stole his bike over concerns for the offenders' safety.
