DSA seek views on bike test proposals
Motorcycle insurance customers are being invited to voice their opinions on proposals to improve the way motorcyclists are tested.
The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) published the plans this week, which could see the current single-event motorbike test divided into two separate modules.
Module one would see riders tested on specified manoeuvres in order to prove their ability to control their machine safely, as well as fulfilling emergency stop exercises.
The second segment, meanwhile, would include an eyesight test followed by 35 minutes of in-traffic riding in order to gauge the biker's capability of dealing with real-life situations and interacting with other road users.
"A two-part modular test would introduce a step-by-step considered approach to riding a motorcycle and offer the candidate time to absorb each separate important stage to learning," stated DSA chief executive Rosemary Thew.
She said a six-week consultation period would give motorcyclists the chance to express their views on the planned changes, which would also see greater coverage of sites in order to reduce the distance travelled by those wishing to take the test.
The proposals come after experts from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents called for road users to undergo refresher training to help cut the number of accidents.
