Parents 'must check mopeds for defects'

Parents who buy mopeds and mini-motorbikes for young riders are being urged not to shirk their responsibilities when it comes to maintaining the machines.

Recent roadside checks by police in Torbay and South Devon have revealed that a number of teenagers in the area are putting both themselves and other road users at risk by riding vehicles that are not roadworthy.

Several machines were issues with prohibition notices to prevent them from being ridden until the defects have been attended to.

MPC Brian Nelson from the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary Motorcycle Wing warned that parents' responsibilities did not end once they had bought the vehicle and paid for motorbike insurance.

"Once paid for the parents leave the maintenance of the mopeds up to the riders and the vehicles are left to deteriorate, leading to poor safety conditions," he said.

Most faults could be quickly and easily detected, he added, urging parents to make sure they kept on top of any necessary repairs to ensure the safety of the well-being of their children.

Telford Police recently hailed the "positive improvement" among young riders after they attended a mini-moto club in the area aimed at improving road behaviour and safety awareness.
