New track for off-road bikers

Motorbike insurance customers who like to take their riding off road could soon find themselves able to use a new track in Northampton.

The track is to be funded by the Northampton Safer Stronger Partnership in a bid to tackle the anti-social use of motorbikes in the area.

It is hoped the scheme will provide an area for safe and legal off-road riding, helping to reduce the number of complaints received by local residents.

Although the track is still some way off becoming a reality, police are now seeking to enlist the help of volunteers who are "passionate about motorbikes and off-road motorcycling" in order to establish and run the track.

Bill Edwards, manager of the Northampton Safer Stronger Partnership, said nuisance riding was "a real concern" to many people in the town.

"Funding this project will help to address the issue in a positive way by giving young people a facility they need that is safe and legal," he claimed.

However, he admitted that the success of the project would "depend greatly" on the help of local volunteers.

Police in Derbyshire recently held meetings with off-road bikers in the area as they sought to help minimise their impact on local residents and promote safe riding.
