Driver advice to help cut motorbike accidents

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued a warning to road users in order to help reduce the number of motorcycle insurance customers suffering accidents.

Warning that motorcyclists on UK roads faced a variety of hazards that they must be aware of, the organisation claimed that car drivers were a significant threat.

For various reasons, drivers often fail to see commuters on two wheels coming towards them - particularly at junctions - and this can result in tragic consequences.

Too many bikers are lifted into the back of an ambulance with the words "sorry mate I didn't see you" ringing in their ears, the IAM claimed.

It therefore urged drivers to make sure they check carefully for all oncoming traffic before pulling out at junctions, as well as taking a series of steps to help ease the passage of motorcycles on heavily congested roads.

Motorists are advised to regularly check their mirrors for bikes and to pull over slightly in order to allow enough room for two-wheeled travellers to get through.

Bikers, in turn, should use their headlights to make them easier to be seen and ride slowly when attempting to filter their way through stationary traffic.

The guidance comes after the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents called for improved training for motorcyclists to help cut the number of deaths on the road.
