New electric bike unveiled

The world's fastest all-electric motorbike has been unveiled to bike insurance customers at an international motorcycle show.

Dubbed a "pioneering venture", the TTX01 was designed and built by British engineers and a prototype of the model has been showcased in Birmingham, according to the Guardian.

With a top speed of 125 mph, it is the most advanced emission-free bike to near commercial production, with makers claiming a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds.

The TTX01 was commissioned by organisers of the world's first emissions-free grand prix to be held in the Isle of Man's TT circuit next June.

Azhar Hussain, who was among the organisers, said the bike represented the future of mainstream electric vehicles.

However, he outlined one potential problem with the vehicle, pointing to the fact that it "hardly makes any noise".

This could pose a problem for pedestrians, he suggested, claiming that "either we start making noise… or we start training people that these bikes will be silent so you need to start looking both ways before crossing the road".

Jeff Stone of the British Motorcyclists Federation welcomed the breakthrough, although he said that, like electric cars, the concept would "take some time to get used to".

This comes after the Motorcycle Retail Association claimed that more people were turning to two-wheeled transport this year to help cut costs and avoid congestion.
