New test 'must not restrict potential new riders'
The number of riders taking out motorcycle insurance on first-time motorcycles is on the rise, and the industry is keen not to restrict further access.
Recessionary pressures have seen the British car market struggle over recent months, but the motorbike sector is standing up well as an increasing number of commuters opt for two-wheeled transport to help cut costs.
Despite this, the Motor Cycle Industry Association and the RMI Motorcycle Retailers' Association (MRA) are keen to ensure that proposals for the new bike test released last week do not hinder those looking to enter the market.
The groups are calling for manufacturers, retailers and trainers across the industry to support the plans - under which the test will include both an off-road and on-road element.
This would allow greater flexibility for locations at which to deliver the on-road element, meaning that motorcycling would remain accessible to as many potential riders as possible, they claim.
Martin Marshall, MRA chairman, said that this form of module offered "the best way forward" for the motorcycle market.
"The options for the industry should modular testing not be adopted, are extremely limited and are almost certain to have a very negative impact on the market," he suggested.
Having released the proposals for the new test, the Driving Standards Agency announced a six-week consultation period during which motorcyclists would also be able to express their views on the changes.
