Police checks to cut bike thefts

West Yorkshire Police are taking steps to deter thieves and reduce the number of motorbike insurance claims across the Wakefield district.

In a bid to drive down thefts, officers will be out in force from the start of next week, performing checks on motorcycles and mopeds on the roads.

Large vans - often used to transport stolen bikes - will also be targeted as part of the operation, which comes in response to a recent increase in the number of vehicles being stolen in the area.

Inspector Terry Murgatroyd of Wakefield District Police said police would attempt to stop and check every motorbike, moped and transit van they encountered.

"Riders and drivers of these vehicles should expect to be stopped but lawful road users have nothing to fear," he assured.

Officers will be checking that vehicles are not stolen, as well as ensuring that all riders and drivers are equipped with the correct documentation and insurance.

Those concerned about the recent rise in thefts can reduce the risk of falling victim to criminals by keeping vehicles locked up in garages or back gardens, Inspector Murgatroyd added.

The campaign follows the attempted theft of 11 mopeds in nearby Lancashire, with some thieves making off with vehicles from driveways and back yards.
