Be careful with online ads, bike sellers warned
Bike insurance customers looking to sell their used vehicles online are being warned not to "put out the welcome mat" for thieves.
Tayside Police warned that giving out too much information when advertising their motorbikes could result in an easy steal for cunning criminals.
Many offenders have taken to accessing classified advertisement websites to garner details on the bikes, which they then use to make off with them.
Crime prevention officer for Dundee Constable Colin Brough said that photos included in sellers' listings could give away more than they realised.
Thieves could use the images to find out the location and security of the bike, before turning up and taking them, he warned.
"Some of the postings quite literally put out the welcome mat by including a mapping system that provides directions virtually straight to the door of the seller," he added.
Those selling their bikes via classified advertisement or social networking sites should review their postings to ensure they were not giving too much away, officers stated.
Police in West Yorkshire recently announced that they will be carrying out a number of checks next week to identify any stolen motorbikes on the roads.
This follows a string of thefts in the area, and will see many moped and bike riders stopped as police look to cut down on the number of incidents.
