Young people turn to bikes

The number of people taking out bike insurance could be set to rise over the next few years, as more and more young people are taking up riding.

Retail outlets across the UK have observed an increase in the number of children's bikes and BMXs being sold.

For example, Evans Cycles has revealed that sales of all its bikes have doubled in the last year, despite the deepening financial crisis in Britain.

Mike Rice, managing director of the chain, believes this is partly due to the lack of "killer" gadgets turning the heads of young people this Christmas.

He commented: "Bikes are a much better long-term purchase for consumers.

"Unlike gadgets, they won't be replaced by another fad in the coming months, can be used all year round and will provide years of use."

Mr Rice added that people are realising that bikes are not disposable items and can therefore be worth more upfront investment.

He said consumers will find that this ultimately pays off in the longer term.

This comes after Derby-based group Active Motorcycle Training revealed that a growing number of people are signing up to learn how to ride a motorbike.

Tony Matthews, owner of the establishment, told the Derbyshire Evening Telegraph this is partly because it is cheaper to run a bike than a car.
