'Think twice' before buying bikes this Christmas
Parents should ensure they are aware of the implications before buying their children motorbikes this Christmas, police have warned.
Mini-motos, quad bikes and off-road bikes no doubt grace the wish-list of many a youngster, but officers are keen to point out the consequences of owning the vehicles.
As part of the campaign, police in Thurrock are visiting schools across the area to distribute posters and leaflets, as well as information newsletters for parents.
Alan Twine, crime reduction officer for Thurrock, said the message from police is clear.
"It is illegal to ride on the roads and open public spaces with these unregistered motorised vehicles," he stated.
Parents who do go ahead with plans to buy the vehicles this Christmas must ensure it is covered by motorbike insurance, tax and registration.
Young riders must also have a valid licence and test certification, or else the vehicle could end up being seized and crushed.
Greater Manchester Police issued a similar caution this week, calling on parents to "stand firm on pester power" and avoid purchasing gifts that could lead to anti-social behaviour.
These include off-road bikes, ball-bearing guns and alcohol, with officers warning that all inappropriate items are likely to be confiscated.
