Police look to cut down on antisocial riders
Greater Manchester Police are urging Santa Claus not to wreak havoc on local communities this Christmas by bringing gifts that could be used in antisocial behaviour.
Officers have placed off-road motorbikes at the top of a list of prospective presents that they fear could spell bad news for the public.
Thousands of complaints have been received this year owing to nuisance riding and other antisocial acts, and police are keen to ensure the problems do not escalate.
They are therefore reminding parents that riding a bike on the roads requires a valid MOT, registration documents and road tax, as well as an adequate motorbike insurance policy.
In addition, money will have to be paid out on safety helmets and other accessories, meaning parents often do not realise the full cost involved when they first buy the machines.
"I would urge parents to look carefully at what young people are asking for, stand firm against pester power and refuse to let them have potentially antisocial and dangerous presents this Christmas," said Chief Superintendent Neil Wain.
The appeal comes after police in Essex warned parents this week that youngsters caught riding bikes illegally will face prosecution, and may have their vehicles seized and crushed.
