Biker creates 'alternative Christmas tree'

The festive season has seen an array of tree and lighting decorations in homes across the UK, but perhaps none more unusual than that on show at the house of one man in Penryn.

Don Cowie, a motorbike insurance customer and Harley Davidson enthusiast from Trewarton Court, decked his 1200 cc vehicle out in tinsel and Christmas lights, before giving it pride of place in his living room, the West Country reports.

Mr Cowie, who was a passionate biker before he was paralysed by a stroke two years ago, conceded that some people would see him as "an eccentric old Geordie". However, having ridden and restored Harleys for more than 35 years, his alternative Christmas tree was representative of the bikes as "a big part of my life", he told the newspaper.

"I thought it would be good to suitably decorate it with festive arrangements," he added. Mr Cowie is currently undergoing extensive physiotherapy to help overcome the effects of his stroke and hopes to be able to ride a motorbike again by the end of next year.

This Christmas has seen a string of festive tributes from bike insurance customers across the UK, with riders from the London Advanced Motorcyclists club dressing in full Santa outfits for their annual toy run to support the Children's Trust earlier this month.
