New code of conduct launched for motorcyclists
A new code of conduct has been launched to advise bikers ahead of the opening of London's red route bus lanes to motorcyclists.
With the new ruling set to come into force from January 5th, the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) is keen to avoid any subsequent rise in the number of accidents.
In a bid to keep motorcycle insurance claims down, the group has teamed up with the Metropolitan Police to issue a series of tips concerning the safe and responsible use of bus lanes.
The MCI's Craig Carey-Clinch said the decision to allow motorcycles in bus lanes for an experimental period is "good news for road safety".
However, he stressed that riders must use this new freedom responsibly to ensure the safety of all of road users.
"This is why the MCI and its partners have developed the Code, which provides valuable advice and encourages riders to be aware of pedestrians and cyclists when they ride in bus lanes," he added.
The new law is designed to help improve access for riders in London, which could see motorbikes become increasingly popular with commuters.
Indeed, MCI claimed earlier this month that the vehicles are becoming "more relevant than ever" as a serious alternative to the use of cars and public transport.
