Bikers warned about cold conditions
Drivers and bikers on the road in Hampshire have been urged to take extra care in cold and frosty conditions by a councillor in the region.
Explaining Hampshire county council's new Icelert system, which uses sensors to monitor whether icy roads need to be salted, Mel Kendal said that while keeping winter roads safe is a priority, motorists also need to use common sense.
"The onus is always on drivers and motorcyclists to keep their speeds down to an appropriate level, leave plenty of room between them and the vehicle in front, and make sure that their vehicles are well maintained," he said.
Driving safely on the roads this winter can help bike insurance customers avoid making a costly claim, particularly in the next week as the temperature is expected to dip below freezing.
Hampshire county council has stated that its priority schedule ensures that roads such as major bus routes, A roads and routes to large schools and emergency service bases are routinely treated.
According to the Met Office, some parts of the country could see temperatures as low as -9 degrees C in the coming days, with rain falling onto frozen surfaces increasing the risk of slippery conditions early in the week.
