Bike deaths fall in Northern Ireland

While the number of bike deaths fell in Northern Ireland last year, there are more things motorcyclists can do to remain safe on the roads, according to a superintendant.

Roy Marshall of the Police Service of Northern Ireland said that while the number of motorcycle deaths fell from 25 in 2007 to 15 in 2008, bikers remain over-represented in the annual road death statistics.

In total, 106 motorists were killed on roads in Northern Ireland last year.

While the figures represent the lowest number of road fatalities since statistics were first compiled in 1931, there are still precautions drivers and motorcyclists can take to remain safe on the roads.

"Slow down, pay greater attention and concentrate while driving or riding a motorbike, always wear a seatbelt and never, ever drive or ride a motorbike after taking drink or drugs," Mr Marshall advised.

Motorcyclists can stay safe on the roads and avoid a potentially costly motorcycle insurance claim by slowing down and taking responsibility for their actions.

According to provisional estimates released by the Department for Transport earlier this year, the number of fatalities in road traffic accidents in the UK decreased by 13 per cent during the 12 months between June 2007 and June 2008.
