Teen drink driver arrested
A 16-year-old motorcyclist can expect to face sizeable motorbike insurance premiums when he finally earns a licence, following a new year run in with police.
The young rider was stopped by Tayside police in Brechin in the early hours of New Year's Day and found to be over the drink-drive limit.
His offence was compounded when it was subsequently discovered he had no licence or motorbike insurance.
The rider was one of a number of young people caught drink driving during the festive road safety campaign in Scotland and Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman admitted he was concerned about the trend.
Tayside police's head of road policing said: "[Young drivers] are at greater risk than any other group of being involved in serious or fatal collisions. There are far too many young drivers drinking and driving and almost all of them are men."
He added that the force would continue to target those motorists who put other people at risk, in a bid to keep them off the roads.
The Association of British Insurers warns that riders convicted of drink driving may find it difficult to find motorbike insurance cover when they get their licence back and that premiums for the policies available to them will be high.
