Motorbike sales 'remain resilient'

The number of riders taking out motorbike insurance after buying new vehicles fell only marginally in 2008, figures have revealed.

According to data released by the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI), sales of motorcycles, mopeds and scooters fell by just 3.4 per cent in 2008 compared to the previous year.

Despite the effects of the credit crunch, which have seen the UK car market plunge by more than 11 per cent over the past 12 months, the two-wheeled market seems to be resilient to the downturn.

Indeed, mopeds ended the year 1.5 per cent up while scooter registrations also increased, suggesting that commuters are increasingly turning to the vehicles as a cheaper mode of transport.

"With a robust performance very close to 2007, the motorcycle market and industry is providing further evidence that powered two-wheelers offer a credible and very affordable transport option," said the MCI's Sheila Rainger.

She added that with 2009 likely to bring further financial pressure, as well as increasing rail fares, motorcycle use is likely to continue to become "more relevant and more practical than ever".

The popularity of motorbikes could also be boosted by the recent decision to open London's bus lanes to riders in a bid to help cut congestion and improve safety.
