Sellers duped by motorbike thieves

Bike insurance customers looking to sell their used vehicles have been warned to proceed with caution.

According to the Tottenham, Wood Green and Edmonton Journal, a series of thefts involving high-powered motorcycles have recently been reported.

In each incident, thieves duped victims by posing as potential buyers of a bike offered for sale, before driving off with the vehicles.

Five motorbikes have been taken in total and police are treating the thefts as linked despite varying descriptions of the suspects.

All of the victims involved had advertised their bikes privately either through a trade paper or over the internet.

Detective Constable Dave Williams, of Haringey's motor vehicle team, urged would-be sellers to "exercise caution" during the sales process.

"Ask the potential buyer to bring their driving licence and insurance certificate showing they are insured to drive your vehicle, check the details add up," he said.

Police are also advising motorbike sellers to keep a note of the name and address of any prospective buyers to help trace their bikes if they do fall victim to the crime.

This comes after a number of thefts in the Jarrow and South Shields areas, which prompted police to urge motorbike owners to step up their security and remain vigilant.
