Rider slapped with six-month ban
A rider in Northern Ireland has been landed with a fine and a six-month driving ban after being caught riding without motorbike insurance.
James Michael Kiernan, from Killynick Road, Killycloghan, was stopped by police in September of last year and found to be riding without motorbike insurance cover, the Fermanagh Herald reports.
The 23-year-old claimed that his policy had been cancelled after he had missed two payments, but he was still slapped with a £250 fine and disqualified from driving for six months.
Mr Kiernan was also fined £90 for riding without a full driving licence.
Fermanagh Magistrates Court heard that Mr Kiernan had already completed the application for his bike test and was therefore permitted to ride a 125cc vehicle.
However, despite claims that he had intended to fit his 750cc bike with a limiter that would enable him to ride it legally, the defendant was handed the fine for taking to the roads illegally.
This comes after a 16-year-old motorcyclist was arrested by Tayside police after being found riding his vehicle despite being over the drink-drive limit.
Officers stopped the teenager on New Year's Day and promptly seized his motorbike after discovering that he was also riding with no licence or insurance cover.
