Police riders set for action

Drivers in Essex are likely to notice an increased number of police motorcyclists on roads across the county in the coming weeks.

Officers are taking to two wheels as part of a "fact-finding mission" to identify problems and priorities in the local area.

It is hoped the campaign will help to cut down on anti-social behaviour and dangerous driving, which could result in a drop in the number of bike insurance claims.

The six-week operation will target specific areas where instances of traffic problems and inconsiderate motoring are especially high.

Police bikers will also be on hand to talk to members of the public to identify and tackle any further concerns.

"Ultimately, we want to live in a safe community without fear of congestion, anti-social driving and being involved in a road crash," said road policing Inspector Justin Smith.

The feedback gathered by the officers will also be used to launch a further operation to stamp out traffic-related problems in the area, he added.

West Yorkshire Police recently trialled an electric scooter for responding to road traffic incidents and weaving through traffic in Leeds city centre.

The Vectrix scooter is powered by a battery and can reach a top speed of up to 65 mph.
