Winter Bikers
The winter can throw up some tricky conditions for motorcyclists. It is important to keep a cool head and take the proper precautions to avoid accidents. Icy roads, rain and heavy winds are not the best environment to be on two wheels so you need to make sure you plan ahead.
Invest in the right winter warmers
A one piece of leather will protect you from the wind. If you don't have one, make sure you layer up to avoid a big chill.
Have a good pair of gloves to hand and a spare one for when they get wet. Heated grips are also worth considering. Wrapping up warm will keep you alert and your reactions sharp, avoiding any potential accidents.
Visibility
Before you set out make sure your headlights are clean and wear some high visibility protective clothing. In bad light or in heavy rain always ride with the assumption that other road users can't see you.
Consider the conditions
Riding sensibly is important at all times but especially in difficult conditions. If the surface is slippery or the wind blowing a gale then it is essential that you take extra care - keeping your distance from other vehicles and riding appropriately for the conditions.
Check your bike
Continue your regular maintenance and check your tyres and lights to ensure they are fit for the winter roads.
Storing your bike
Keep your bike stored in a warm place at night to avoid problems such as the fuel freezing. Invest in some anti-misting spray for your visor and mirrors.
Can you cancel the trip?
Finally, if the weather is really treacherous then you should consider putting off your journey altogether - if that's possible of course. Dense fog or heavy snow can be too much even for the most experienced rider to cope with.
